Her connection to nature began in her youth with the Portuguese Scouts, where she learned the importance of respecting the environment. Over time, this connection deepened, leading her to engage in acts of solidarity and environmental care.

Débora’s journey to founding Planet Caretakers wasn’t marked by a single moment of realization but was rather a gradual process. In early 2020, she traveled to Brazil, where a planned three-month trip turned into a six-month stay due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, she helped a poor community on Itaparica Island, mobilizing friends in Portugal to raise funds for basic necessities. This experience taught her the power of collective action and planted the seeds for what would become Planet Caretakers.

After returning to Portugal, Débora participated in a litter cleanup at Fonte da Telha. Despite a small turnout, she was inspired to recruit more people for future events. The success of these efforts led her to create Planet Caretakers, a platform for individuals passionate about caring for nature and others. The project quickly grew, forming 25 active teams that conducted 300 cleanups, removing 44 tons of trash in three years.

Today, Planet Caretakers aims to build a global network of environmental stewards, inspiring individuals to take action in preserving the planet.
